Daniel Marwecki is a lecturer at the University of Hong Kong. Whilst his PhD research focused on German-Israeli relations, his teaching and writing have expanded since starting at HKU, covering themes of world order in the context of a re-emergent Asia and relative Western decline.

His first book, titled Germany and Israel: Whitewashing and Statebuilding (Hurst), appeared in 2020 and has recently been re-issued as a paperback. An updated German version of the book appeared in 2023 under the title Absolution? Israel und die deutsche Staatsräson (Wallstein). His book on the changing world order, Die Welt nach dem Westen (Aufbau), appeared in German in 2025. An English translation will be published in 2027 (The World after the West, Polity Press). He is currently finishing a third monograph on Europe in a multipolar world under the title Graceful Decline, with publication scheduled for 2027.

Marwecki’s teaching is broad in scope, covering Middle East politics, development economics, and international security. A committed teacher, he won the Outstanding Teaching Award of HKU’s Faculty of Social Sciences in 2025 and received HKU’s Excellent and Inclusive Practice Award in 2024–25. He also serves as the deputy director for the Master of International and Public Affairs (MIPA).

He has written essays and commentaries for journals and newspapers such as Le Monde Diplomatique, UnHerd, Jacobin, ZEIT, Berlin Review of Books, and others. He has been interviewed about both of his German-language books by most major news outlets and has been a frequent contributor to radio, television, and podcasts.

Before joining HKU, Marwecki taught at the University of Leeds as well as SOAS University of London, from where he obtained his PhD in 2019. His previous education took place in Germany and France. He also spent time travelling and working in the Caucasus and the Middle East before choosing an academic path.
