Beyond STEM and Non-STEM: New Courses on AI and Web 3.0 Breaking Down Disciplinary Barriers to Drive True Innovation

True innovation happens where technical skill meets deep domain knowledge. Co-led by three HKU graduates, “the Social Impact through Digital Innovation Series” brings together practitioners from tech companies, startups, legacy industries, and regulators to show students how digital technologies are transforming the workplace—and how to prepare for it.

Semester OneThe 21st-century workplace is changing fast—are you ready?

CCAI9022: Taming the Digital Wild West: From Disruption to Impact in the AI Era

100% Coursework | 6 Credits | Semester 1 (Wednesdays 17:00–18:50)

This Common Core course features a series of industry speakers and local use cases to show you how people in different organizations—from big tech companies and startups to legacy businesses—harness AI productively and responsibly. Designed for those looking to map their career aspirations to the changing conditions of the AI-powered workplace.

 

Course Highlights:

  • Access to Industry Leaders: Engage with founders, regulators, corporate intrapreneurs, and investors sharing insights critical to early career success.
  • Real-World Skills: Learn how to identify service gaps, link them to tech solutions, and align your career plans accordingly.
  • Hands-on Learning: Create multimedia content, conduct fieldwork with industry professionals, and devise tech-powered strategies for real social enterprises seeking growth.

 

Semester TwoFrom ideas to impact—are you ready to build?

COMP3160 / POLI3160: Web 3.0 for Social Impact

100% Coursework | 6 Credits | Semester 2 (Fridays 16:00–18:50)

Serving as an advanced extension of CCAI9022, COMP3160/POLI3160 is a cross-listed disciplinary elective that offers a self-directed environment where students from different disciplines team up to develop ideas into scalable, real-world solutions and prototype them with guidance from industry mentors.

 

Course Highlights:

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Pair up with peers across disciplines to co-design tech-for-good products.
  • Hands-on Mentorship: Participate in practical workshops on product design, fundraising, data security, and project management led by field practitioners.
  • Live Pitching: Present your team’s prototype to impact investors and domain experts.
  • Sponsored Overseas Field Trip (in summer, with optional SIGC-eligible credits): Opportunity to join a fully sponsored immersion trip to visit tech startups, incubators, and impact investors in a location outside Hong Kong.
