Dr. Daniel Marwecki, lecturer at the HKU Department of Politics and Public Administration and Deputy Director of Master of International and Public Affairs (MIPA) program, has recently published a book in his native German about the changing world order. Titled Die Welt nach dem Westen [The World after the West], the book argues that, whilst we are moving towards a post-Western order, this order is still marked by the original moment of its creation – the global and violent expansion of the West in the 19th century.
In a wide-ranging account, Dr. Marwecki discusses the making and the problems of the liberal international order that seems to now be disappearing. The book explains the reemergence of Asia and explores the potential future role of a Europe that currently seems lost, stumbling blindly into a post-unipolar world. Dr. Marwecki demonstrates how Donald Trump is best understood as the “decline manager” of Western power.
The book is selling well and has received a highly positive reception in Germany.
Dr. Marwecki has been interviewed by major newspapers and weeklies such as Spiegel, FAZ, and ZEIT. He has contributed expertise, spoken to sold-out audiences, and appeared on German television. The book features in a prominent Top 10 list of nonfiction books, compiled by a jury of journalists and scientists. The book has received praise in numerous reviews and even counts a former Chancellor of Germany among its readers.
We are especially pleased to note that the book is based not least on Dr. Marwecki’s teaching at HKU over the past years, for which he has also received the teaching prize of the Faculty of Social Sciences recently. As such, the book is truly a product of his time spent between Hong Kong and Germany.
We congratulate Dr. Marwecki on his success and hope for an English translation soon!
