Following his previous research on partisan electoral interventions, which concludes that electoral interference can boost the electoral chances of the assisted side, increase domestic terrorism and weaken democracy, Professor Dov Levin has recently published a new article (with his coauthor Paul Musgrave) in Foreign Policy Analysis, entitled To What End? Policy Objectives and US Public Support for Political Warfare.

There are many forms of political warfare strategies, such as sanctions, covert regime change/coups, propaganda, disinformation, and foreign electoral interventions. In Professor Dov Levin’s series of survey experiments, he finds that for foreign electoral interventions and other aforementioned strategies, humanitarian objectives elicit greater support than those carried out to counter threats to US leadership or to promote US economic interests.

This is an interesting finding, as it appears that the US public doesn’t prioritize protecting US hegemony to the same extent as US politicians do.

He also finds foreign electoral interventions are preferred over many other policy options- such as inciting coups.
