The HKU Department of Politics and Public Administration Launches Inaugural Asia-Pacific Politics and Public Administration Conference (APPPA)

The HKU Department of Politics and Public Administration is pleased to announce the inaugural of Asia-Pacific Politics and Public Administration Conference (APPPA), which is held alongside with the 8th Empirical Political Science in Hong Kong Workshop (EPSHK).

 

This two-day conference (May 16-17, 2025) brings together over 100 scholars from the Asia Pacific region and beyond. The papers and panels exhibit strong coherence across all sections, driven by a shared interest in governance, legitimacy and political contestation. These are examined through diverse lenses and sophisticated methodological approaches.

 

The Conference brings together perspectives from the international relations, comparative politics and public administration. It also draws on empirical analyses of behavioral events in East and Southeast Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.

 

Professor Robert Thomson, Head of the HKU Department of Politics and Public Administration said during the opening remarks, “The conference reflects what the Asia Pacific communities in political science and public administration increasingly present – adherence to modern social scientific standards, disciplinary integration, and international dialogue.”

 

He also recognized the leadership of Professor Jiangnan Zhu, the first among the equals, as well as the other members of the organizing committee Professor Kwan Nok CHAN, Professor Enze HAN, Professor Dov LEVIN, Professor Kai QUEK as well as Professor Nicole WU, for their creativity, energy and collegial spirit.

 

Professor Ming WEN, Dean of The Faculty of Social Sciences encourages this sort of collaboration and hopes that more students and scholars will join in.

 

Scholars from a great diversity of institutional, regional, and international backgrounds filled the room with lively discussions and laughter.

 

The first day concluded with Professor James Perry and Professor Wai-Fung Lam announcing the special issue of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Administration, a peer-reviewed journal owned and editorially housed by the PPA Department.
