Biography:
Mark SIDEL is Doyle-Bascom Professor of Law and Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and an elected member of the American Law Institute. His research focuses on the nonprofit sector and philanthropy (with a focus on Asia and the United States), modern secessionary movements, and constitutional law in China and Vietnam.

He serves on the boards of the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, the China Medical Board, Give2Asia, and Latitude Global, and is a graduate of Princeton, Yale, and Columbia Law School.

Abstract:
Overseas philanthropy is on the wane in China, the result of rising barriers in China and beyond. This talk will discuss the rise and role of overseas philanthropy to China beginning in the 1980s and 1990s, the fall of overseas philanthropy in China as securitization took hold and domestic philanthropy began to rise, and the dynamics of the twilight of overseas philanthropy today in China.
